~ Obituary ~

Sister Vera Felton was born March 12, 1948 to the late Eugene and Elizabeth McCown, in Marion County.  She was educated through Marion County school system and graduated from Johnakin High School.   Later, she was employed at International Paper where she became at supervisor and served over twenty years.

Sister Vera did all she could to be the best version of herself for the glory of her God.  He used her to draw people from near and far to bless them.  Never meeting a stranger, she made everyone feel at home and like family.  She gave when it meant that she would go lacking, and taught lessons to be treasured for a lifetime.  One of the wisest things she would teach her family is that, you can only walk the journey that God created for you.  This is the way she lived and set the example for her family.

After retiring from International Paper, Sister Vera optimized her gift to care for others by becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.  She became the community’s Mother Teresa.  Aside from caring for others, one of her favorite hobbies was bowling.  She was good!  So good in fact, she traveled all over the country to play in different tournaments where she earned the nickname “Sweet Pea.”

Queen Vera’s Reign…

I Corinthians 13:7 “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”  Sister Vera loved the Lord her God and it showed in the way she loved her parents, children, grandkids, friends, and community.  She even loved God’s creation which showed in her care for her garden and farm animals.

Her memory will live on through those who knew and loved her.  She gave birth to four children from her late husband, Little Neal Felton, Sr., of eighteen years, but she mothered five in her home and many others in her community.  Her children:  Gwen Felton of Sellers, SC, Little Neal Felton Jr. of Golden, CO, Chris (Cherille) Felton of Sellers, SC, Alonzo Felton of Marion, SC, Helen (Thomas) Ford of Fayetteville, NC and Shaneen Pearson of Fairbanks, AK; her siblings:  Eugene McCown of Bellflower, CA and Vanessa Pearson of Concord, NC, [She was preceded in death by siblings:  Iva Jean Johnson and Judy Ford], 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her New Mt. Zion A.M. E. Church of Sellers, SC family for which her absence already rings a deafening and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In her final moments, Sister Vera was adamant that everyone knew that she “would be alright.”  Even up until the moment God called her home, she was still trying to take care of her family… a family who loves her tremendously, and are devastated by her deeply felt absence from this earth.  She will be missed even more than there are stars in the sky by all who truly knew her.

Rest Queen Mother.  Rest in the peace and unending joy you now have with God.
