-THE OBITUARY-

Life is not determined by the length of time a woman liveth but by the service she gives as she lives.  At an early age our departed surrendered her life to God and rendered her service to her community and her household of faith until her death.

Disciple MARY ALICE GENERAL BELTON, the daughter of the late Paul and Magdelene Miller General, was born April 16, 1921 in Marion County, South Carolina.

She attended the public schools of Marion County and after graduation she attended the Elite School of Beauty in Orangeburg, South Carolina.  Late she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked many years as an Insurance Agent for Progressive Life Insurance Agency before she returned back home to be with her ailing father in Latta, South Carolina.  Mrs. Belton also worked as a Paraprofessional for Dillon School #2 for many years before retirement.  God blessed her with a long productive life.

Mary Alice was affiliated with civic organizations and her dearly beloved household of faith, St. Phillips United Methodist Church, Marion, South Carolina.  She worked tirelessly at St. Phillips UMC in many capacities.  She was especially fond of serving as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent.  She was the founder of the St. Phillips UMC Noon Day Prayer Service.  Her special group was the United Methodist Women.

She was married to the late Haywood H. Belton.  Mr. Belton was the father of three children whom he and Mrs. Belton parented together.  She acted as a mother and friend to many over the years.  For several years during her marriage to Mr. Belton, Mrs. Belton was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Latta, South Carolina.  She was the organizer of the V. Jackson / M. Belton Singers.

Left to cherish the memories of Mary Alice are: two stepchildren, Hazelene Watson of Gaston, North Carolina and Joyce B. Taggart of Durham, North Carolina.  Michael Haywood (Geraldine) preceded her in death.  Six grandchildren: Stacey, Michele, Michael, Donna, Vicki and Durrell.  There are special cousins and friends who are a part of the memory of Mary Alice General Belton.  Three God Children: Rita James, Clifford Jacobs and Kim Legette.
