~ Obituary~

Mamie Ruth Gerald Foxworth was the eldest daughter of sixteen children, eleven boys and five girls. Born into the union of the late Walter and Daisy Gerald, in Mullins, South Carolina on May 20, 1921. She departed this life on June 16, 2020.

Our mother was educated in Mullins, South Carolina, receiving her High School Diploma; she went on completing nursing school becoming a practical nurse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mom was truly gifted in sewing, very talented in cooking and she made the absolute best vegetarian burgers, sweet potato pies, biscuits and stuffing (dressing). She had a way of showing love through her various talents.

Mom was united in holy matrimony to the late John D. Foxworth on January 24, 1944. They made their home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they were blessed with seven children and one adopted daughter: John Lionel, Christine, Freddie, Delores, Vernessa, Alfonso, Shirley and Gwendolyn, who preceded her in death.

Mom did factory work for approximately 25 years; she also worked at the Children’s Hospital pf Pennsylvania for a few years, as a volunteer. She loved working with children, administering to their needs.

Mom was initially reared in Effingham Baptist Church in Mullins, South Carolina. Her parents instilled in their family the love of God. Mom loved God with all of her heart, mind and soul. Jesus was the center of her life and joy. She became a Seventh-Day Adventist, as a result of a tent effort in 1964. She read the scriptures and studied daily with morning and evening  worship. Her favorite songs were; “What A Friend Wh Have In Jesus”, which she learned to play on the piano and “Trust & Obey.” She was an avid reader with an extensive library of books. How do we know this? Passages were marked and underlined in every book we opened, a legal she left for her children to follow. Her church family said “every Wednesday Prayer meeting, she would testify and ask for prayer for each of her children, calling them by name.”

Mom was well known for her listening ear. She would be there for anyone who needed to talk; she would pray with them and encouragingly direct them to trust the Lord with whatever issue troubled them. She mentored her children, grandchildren, neighborhood children with the joy of the Lord. She planted seeds of Christ everywhere she could and as a result, many have accepted Christ.

Mom served as head deacons at the North Philadelphia SDA Church which transcended to the Mizpah SDA Church as she was one of the magnificent seven sent to grow a new church. She was also a Sabbath School Teacher, a Bible Worker, counselor, doctor, nurse and she visited the sick.

Mom leaves to carry on her legacy of love to the Foxworth Family, there sons, Lionel (Regina), Freddie (Bernadette), Alfonso; four daughters, Christine (Claude), Delores (John), Vernessa (Howard), and Shirley (Michael), two brothers, Nathaniel (Barbara), Harry (Ruth), four sisters, Gladys, Lena, Esther (John) and Rose; three sisters-in-law, Florence, Marcine and Geta, one brother-in-law Emmitt; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
