Sis. Mae P. Smith, 56, departed this life on Friday, January 10, 2020 in Florence County. She was the wife of Sam Smith, the daughter of Lillie Phillips and the mother of Meagan Dunham. She was member of Resurrection Life Church in Marion,SC.

The funeral service for Sis. Mae P. Smith will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 12 noon in the Bethlehem AME Church in Rains, SC. Friends of the family and classmates at Marion High School are asked to serve as flower and pall bearers.

~ Obituary~ 

In the quiet hours of Friday, January 10, 2020, Mae Magline Smith began her journey to eternal rest. Was was loaned to Lillie Phillips and the late Gold Weaver. She was preceded in death by her eldest sister, Mary Ann Fore, in 2015 and her youngest brother Keith Rondell Phillips, in 2019 and her oldest nephew Edward Charles Fore, in 2019. At home, Mae’s family affectionately refereed to her as “Tootsie.” As a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, she would do anything to protect her family and to keep them from harm’s way. Mae never met a stranger and sought to make a lasting connection with everyone. 

Mae was a Marion native and graduated from Marion High School in 1982. In high school she was member of the Marion High School Track team. Later in life, Mae made served as head coach for the Marion High School Track Team. Her love for track inspired many students. Mae was a Coker College graduate with a degree in Psychology. Mae served in several positions within the Marion County School District. Her favorite and most recent appointment was the opportunity to work with students at the Academy for Careers and Technology Vocational Center. She took pride oil going above and beyond her scope of duty for all students who needed resources for career advancement. She was well known for connecting students to college programs, jobs, and military recruiters from her network. Mae was a member of Resurrection Life Church in Marion South Carolina.

Mae will forever be remembered by her only child, Meagan Dunham of New Orleans, LA; her mother Lillie Phillips of Marion, SC, one aunt Virginia McDougal of Marion, SC; three brothers; Johnny Phillips of Marion, SC, Larry Owens of Gresham, SC, Wallace Owens of Colorado, her sisters; Deborah Fleming of Columbia, SC, Judy Owens of Indianapolis, IL, Janice Owens of Trenton of Trenton, NJ, Juliette Weaver of Georgia, a cousin Willie Phillips, two nieces; Jasmine Phillips of Marion, SC and Eva Phillips of Marion, SC, three nephews; Christopher Black of Marion, SC, Hakeem Mills of Summerville, SC and Rashawn Fore of Marion, SC. Mae also leaves a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
