Brother Leonard McClain departed this life Friday April 16, 2021 in Middleton, New York. He was the husband of Sheila McClain, the brother of Harold McClain. You may visit the family at 1402 Oakland Rd. Hamer, SC.
Public viewing will be held at the House of Thomas 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Dillon, SC 29536, Friday April 23, 2021, 3:30 pm-8:00 pm
Funeral services will be held at the Manning Baptist Church 308 E. Calhoun St. Dillon, SC 29536, on Saturday April 24, 2021at 11:00 am. He will be laid to rest at the Resthaven Cemetery, Dillon, SC. Services will be live-streamed on the Jackson & McGill Facebook Page.
~ OBITUARY~
Leonard McClain was the fifth child born to the late Hector and Venella Allen McLain February 10, 1950 in Dillon County, South Carolina.
He was introduced to Christianity and became a member of McCoy’s Chapel United Methodist Church at a very young age.
He attended Whittaker Elementary School and graduated from Gordon High School in Dillon, SC. Upon graduation, he attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC.
Leonard migrated to New York and worked in construction until he moved to Greenville, SC to pursue a career in law enforcement. He graduated from the South Carolina Police Academy and was employed by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department.
He left Greenville to return to New York to pursue a career in security for several corporations, including the Hearst Corporation and Boston Properties.
Leonard joined Brooklyn Tabernacle Church where he worked in the Youth Ministry as well as served as the Director of Fire & Safety for the church. As Director of Fire & Safety, he was held in high esteem by all who met him. He even made a lasting friendship with television personality and broadcast journalist Gayle King.
It was at Brooklyn Tabernacle Church that he met Sheila Walker, his future wife. On May 22, 1999, they were united in holy matrimony. The couple moved to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania where they currently reside.
Leonard never met a stranger and made many friends in life. He loved dining out and often frequented the Carolina Comedy Club on Broadway in New York to laugh and have dinner.
Leonard leaves to mourn his passing his wife Sheila of 22 years; a stepdaughter, Tranice Tonge; Five sisters: Delphine D. McClain, NY; Elrita Spruill (Henry) of Maryland; Wanda McClain, Little Rock, SC; Denise Whittington (Von), Hamer, SC; Sherry McNeil (John) Dillon, SC. Five brothers: Horace McNeil (Juanita), NY; James V. (Jim) McClain (Linda), North, SC; Harold McClain (Carolyn) Santee, SC; Billy McClain (Arnetha) Greenville, SC; Thomas McClain, Little Rock, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family of Brother Leonard McClain in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state and local community, has decided to hold a private 50 people or less, family only, funeral service for their loved one with private interment immediately following. While the McClain family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. What the family needs most at this time are your prayers and understanding. Thank you for your concern and cooperation.
