~ Obituary~

Henry L. Leonard was born in Marion County, South Carolina on June 23, 1939 to the late Nicholas and Nettie Maude Leonard.  Henry departed this earthly life in the Mullins Nursing Center, Mullins, South Carolina on Monday May 4, 2020 after years long battle with lung cancer.

Henry attended Marion county publics schools and soon after moved to Washington DC.  It was while he was working in Washington DC that he met and then married Velma Smith and to this union five children were born: Terry, Regina, April, Tyrone and Candi.

While living in Washington, DC he worked as a construction worker.  When he decided to move back to South Carolina he became a certified Caterpillar forklift operator for SoPac Co. and remained with them for 12years. While working full-time as a forklift operator he continued to operate a small farm of vegetables and pigs.  He really enjoyed plowing and sowing the fields with his tractor and then sharing the harvested fruits of the field with his friends and family. He is lovingly remembered as “the vegetable man”, as he would drive door-to-door selling sweet potatoes, turnips, melons and more.

Henry joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the early 1980s, would sing as a member of their Male Choir and attend church regularly until he fell ill in these past few years.

Henry is survived by his wife Velma Leonard and five loving children: Terry (Sheila) Leonard of Florence, SC; Regina (Casey) Danielson of Washington, DC; April Latrina Leonard of Washington, DC; Tyrone (Tanesha) Leonard of Dillon, SC; Candi Denise Leonard of Mullins, SC.

Five grandchildren: T. Jarvis Leonard and Zoe Leonard of Florence, SC; Marquasia Mitchell, Morgan Leonard and Eden Leonard of Dillon, SC.

One brother Larry (Debra) Leonard of Mullins, SC; one sister Verdell (Roosevelt (deceased)) Howard of Mullins, SC; one best friend Mr. Robert Bell of Mullins and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
