Hazel Lee Edwards Obituary

Mother Hazel Lee Legette Edwards was 93, and departed this life on Tuesday September 22, 2020 at her home in Marion County.  She was the mother of Barbara Pigatt, Diane Hughes and Connie Smith.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel on Saturday September 26, 2020 at 3:00 pm. She will be laid to rest at the Bethlehem AME Church Cemetery, Rains. Services will be live stream on the Jackson & McGill Facebook Page.

Mother Hazel Lee Legette Edwards entered into sternal rest on Tuesday September 22, 2020.

She was born on Wednesday, July 20, 1927 in Marion South Carolina. She was the daughter of James Monroe and Lura Beaty Legette. He maternal grandparents were Lucien and Lizzie Brown Beaty and her paternal grandparents were William Henry and Flora Jane Davis Legette. She was a 1975 graduate of Rains-Centenary High School.

She was converted at an early age and joined New Hope Holiness Church, Rains, SC and later joined Bethlehem AME Church in Rains, SC where she served faithfully. She served on the Stewardess Board, Missionary Board, Trustee Board and other organizations of the church. She was very passionate about serving and supporting her church. She was currently serving as Church Historian and the Mother of the Church and she did these things with great pride. 

After retiring from industrial work, she became the nanny to her grandchildren and great grandchildren giving them all of the love and nurturing she could give them and always praying for them. She really loved her family.

She was loved and respected by all that knew her because of the love and generosity she showed them. She was referred to as “Muh” by so many that knew her. She was very knowledgeable of the Bible.

She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Robert W. Edwards in October 1945.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents Monroe and Lura Legette; sister: Wilma (Erskine) Legette; four brothers: James (Margaret) Legette, Clemson (Jayne) Legette, Jr. and Oscar Legette; one granddaughter: Heather D. Rowell.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, three daughters: Barbara (Dallas) Pigatt, Dianne (Rowmell) Hughes and Connie (Roderick) Smith; twelve grandchildren, twenty grand-children and one great-great grandchild; a special cousin: Dr. Mark S. (Michelle) Thompson; her caregiver: Sherita Inman; special friends: Mary R. Crawford, Mae West Green, McKever and Lucile Hemingway; her church escorts: David Howard, Larnell Green and Vic Williams.

The family of Mother Hazel Lee Legette Edwards, in consideration of the current health crisis facing our world, nation, state and local community, has decided to hold a private 50 people or less, family only, funeral service for their loved one with private interment immediately following. While the Edwards family would love to be surrounded by your presence, they acknowledge the health risks to family, church members, friends, and particularly to those who are most vulnerable to this disease, the elderly and those with chronic  health conditions. What the family needs most at this time are your prayers and understanding. Thank you for your concern and cooperation.
