~ Life’s Reflections ~

“Looking back through the years, there were joys and some tears, there were losses and gains, there was laughter and some pain. Days of labor were long; grace from God kept us strong. At the close of life’s day; Shepherd hands will lead the way.” “All is well, All is well, All is well!” ~ James Hendrix, 1920

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” John 11:25

Deacon Luther J. Hendley (“Luther J., Daddy, Granddaddy, and Deacon Luke affectionately called by some) son of the late Bishop Oscar H. Hendley and the late Mrs. Josephine Willis Hendley was born on Friday, June 8, 1928 in Marion County. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 in the Carolinas Hospital System in Marion after an extended illness.

Luther J. was reared in a Christian home and at an early age he joined and became a member of Sandy Grove Holiness Church, Marion, SC., under the leadership of his father the late Bishop Oscar H. Hendley, founder and pastor. It was at Sandy Grove Holiness Church that he began to develop an appreciation for God. His love for God was the core of his existence. He was ordained to the Deacons Ministry on October 28, 2001.

Later in life he became a charter member of New Beginnings Temple of Praise under the leadership of Drs. Michael and Deloris A. Fogan. As a member he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons and attended Church and Sunday School on a regular basis. He loved his church, his church family and his pastors.’ He remained faithful until his health began to decline. Yet, whenever he felt as though he could sit through a service, he was there, not complaining but in the service of the Lord.  He will truly be missed.

He attended Marion County Public Schools. He had a strong belief and work ethic and worked various jobs to provide for his family. He was employed with AVM and Mullins Leaf Tobacco Company both of Mullins, SC and his final employment was with Heritage Sportswear of Marion, SC

He met and married the love of his life; his sweetheart Laura Agnes Buie on Saturday, November 21, 1953. Their marriage was heavenly blessed as their home was created with bands of love to reach out and make it a safe haven for others. Luther J. loved his family and greeted others with a warm spirit of agape love.
