Deacon Joseph Butler Obituary

Deacon Joseph B. Butler 81, departed this life Thursday March 2, in Mullins SC. He was the husband of Renee Butler, the father of Ashelie Butler, JoNee Butler, Ruth Butler, Diana Smith, Patricia Allen, Joann Butler and Rachel Butler. You may visit the family at 316 N. Park St. Mullins.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Sunday March 12, at 2:30 pm.

~ The Obituary ~

Joseph Butler 81 departed this earthly life on Thursday, March 2, 2023. Joseph passed away peacefully at home where he wanted to be. Joseph was born March 18, 1941 to the late Joseph Butler Sr. and Ethel Clark.

Joe had a brother Bernard Clark that preceded him in death.

Joseph was educated in the private schools in New York City and graduated from Resurrection High School.

Joe joined the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist church along with his wife and two young daughters Ashelie and JoNee’ soon after moving to SC. Joe was a very active member and Deacon until he could no longer attend due to covid and his failing health.

Joe went on to work for the World Bank in New York City as head teller for several years. Joe went on to work for the NYPD for 21 years working in various specialty units before retiring as a homicide detective. Joe after retiring from the NYPD went directly to work for the NY State Office of Professional Discipline where he was employed 20 years as both a Sr. Investigator and then promoted to supervisor.

Joe also worked real estate in Las Vegas for Century 21 Money World and Century 21 King Agency after moving to SC.  Joe went to work for the Myrtle Beach, SC Police Department first in the 911 Communications department then he moved into the role of the jail detention officer from which he retired in 2013.  

Joe also served two terms as the President of the Marion County NAACP and also serving on various boards on the state level of the NAACP and various community boards.

Joe until the time of death was an active member of the Detective’s Endowment Association, INC, The New York Retired Guardians Association and an honorary member of the SC Sheriff’s department.

Joe leaves to cherish his memories~ a loving and devoted wife of a 27 years that cared for him until death Renee’ Butler, seven daughters: Ashelie Butler, JoNee’ Butler, Ruth Butler, Diana Smith, JoAnn Butler, Rachel Butler, grandson Jordan and his fur baby boy Major. Joe has a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, two great grands, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Joe has some very special friends Dicky Taylor a lifelong and devoted friend since small children, Timothy Hubbard and Henry Douglas and Joseph Richardson with whom he has shared many special memories.
