Deacon James Reid Obituary

Deacon James "Bubba" Reid, 83, departed this life Sunday October 20, 2019 in Florence County. He was the husband of Lillie Reid. You may visit the family at 1677 Singletary Rd. Marion, SC. in the Wahee Community.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Marion Sunday October 27, 2019 at 2:00 pm. He will be laid to rest in the St. Timothy Baptist Church Cemetery, Marion.

Deacon James “Bubba” Reid was born August 21, 1936 in Atlanta, Ga. to the late Cleo Reid and James Martin. He departed this life on Sunday October 20, 2019 in MUSC Health, Florence SC.

He and his mother moved to Detroit Michigan in 1944. He was educated in the Detroit Public School system. In 1949 his mother married Benjamin Hardman who became a father figure to young James.

In November 1953 he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Thelma Latimer Reid. From this union six children were born.

Mr. Reid joined Greater Beulah Baptist Church in 1971 under Dr. J.L. Calmese. He was ordained by Rev. Calmese and was chairman of the Deacon Board where he served faithfully until he moved to Marion. He was also one of the directors of Greater Beulah Special Chorus for many years.

Later in life on June 9, 1984 he was joined in holy matrimony the Deaconess Lillie Avant Reid. 

He and his wife Lillie Avant Reid joined Bethlehem Baptist Church on January 5, 1997 under Rev. H.K. Phillips. He served faithfully as Deacon. He was also a member of the Male Chorus and Senior Choir. He was appointed as Chairman of the Deacon Board where he served faithfully until God called him to his new home.

 He was preceded win death by one son James Reid II.

Deacon Reid leaves to cherish his loving memories of his blended family his wife; Deaconess Lillie Avant Reid of the home, children;  Toni (Frank), Karl (Ann), Linda ( Samuel), Dwayne (Kim), and Derrick, James Brown, Patricia Metcalf, Michelle (Sheldon) Gilmore, Jerry Brown, Beverly Brown and Gregory Brown, grandchildren, Kenya Nicole, Karl Jr., Charisse, Jason, Angelique, Ciara, Ashley, Alexis, Erika, Tameka Duffield, Tamela Brown, Jimmy Brown, Mesha Brown, Rochell Moore, Antonio Brown, Theoda Metcalf, Jasmine Brown, Anthony Jones Jr., Anthony Hampton, Coriann McMillen, Corian McMillen, Kayla Lee, twenty-two great grandchildren with one on the way and one great-great grandchild, his adopted fifth son Joel Lipscomb,  one sister-in-law Elizabeth (Moody) Avant, two brother-in-laws Jordan (Marie) Avant, James (Odella) Avant, a host of cousins, other relatives, friends and co-workers of both of Detroit and Marion. A lifelong friend Deacon Willie Davis.
