~ Obituary ~
2nd Timothy 4:7 “ I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
Mother Celia Woodberry Cross transitioned to her heavenly home, Friday, January 15, 2021 in Florence County South Carolina. Mother Celia was born July 4, 1922 to the late Joe and Addy Hannah Woodberry in Marion County South Carolina. Mother Celia was the youngest of ten siblings.
Mother Celia was educated in the Marion County school system. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in the Penderboro Community of Marion County South Carolina. She attended regularly until her health declined.
Mother Celia was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Hoyt Cross and this union was blessed with six children of whom three preceded her in death: Hoyt Cross Jr.; Isaiah Cross; Anna Mae Cross; one grand-son, Timothy Cross; and adopted son Elder Levern (Clara) Bennett.
Mother Celia was such a joy to be around. She possessed such a sweet and nurturing spirit. She loved everybody, especially children. Whether she was having a good or bad day she always kept that beautiful smile on her face. Her home was a haven of love. She always made everyone that;entered her home feel welcome. That’s the kind of woman Mother Celia was. She loved fishing, and would fish every day if she could get someone to take her to the fish pond. She was also a homemaker and worked in private homes for various families. Mother Celia was a “Nana” to many people young and old.
Mother Celia leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted and loving daughter and caretaker, Ruby Cross of the home; Joeann Cross-Edwards of Marion, SC; Thomas (Lois) Cross of Florence, SC.; and (like-a-son) George Brown of Florence, SC.
Mother Celia reared several grandchildren as her own: Isaiah Cross and David Cross of Phila, Pa.; Janice Gilyard of Summit New Jersey, Keith Cross, Barbara Cross and Angela Cross Davis of Florence, SC; Roosevelt Cross of Dillon, SC; Jarrod Edwards and Jason Cross of Austin, Texas, Vicky Cross (Marcus) Robinson of Marion, SC. Nine siblings preceded her in death: Tissa Thomas; Nita Thomas; Lila Moody; Starlene Woodberry; Ramus Woodberry; Lembert Woodberry; Alford “Junior” Woodberry; Joe “Junior” Woodberry; and Jasper Woodberry. Mother Celia leaves a legacy of 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grand-children.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers for Mother Celia. Also special thanks to her caring neighbors and family members: Joyce Godfrey Brunson; Linda Green, Joyce Reed-Moore. Richard Kiphart and Phillip Legette.
