~ Celebration of Life for Alberteen Owens ~

(September 16, 1925- November 14, 2022)

Alberteen Owens was born September 16, 1925 in Sellers, South Carolina to the late Carlos and Hattie Braddy. The oldest of four children born to that union, she attended and graduated from all levels of primary education in Sellers. Although she relocated to the Washington, D.C. area at age 16 to help support her family, she frequently returned to Sellers to check on her "momma" (maternal grandmother, Elisha Braddy Barr Rogers), whom she cared for until her passing. Ultimately, Alberteen settled in Jamaica (Queens), N.Y. from the late 1950’s until the early 2000's, finally electing to return closer to home and remain in Dillon until her passing.

Alberteen Owens was the mother of one daughter and five sons whom she raised with the late Elijah “Junior” Stewart. Alberteen was a loving and caring person who respected and loved people for who they were. Her greatest worldly love were children. You could always find her babysitting and loving on a child, imprinting knowledge and love on generations. She jokingly referred to herself as the living rendition of the old lady in the shoe, who had so many children she didn't know what to do. Fondly called “Teen” by her siblings and mother, “Momma “by her children, “Aunt Teen” by her nieces and nephews, and “Nana” by her grandchildren and others. Everyone knew Alberteen was an exceptional cook who was always prepared to serve up something delicious at a moment’s notice.

“Teen” was a devoted believer of Jesus Christ, giving her life to the Lord at an early age. She was an avid scripture reader and attended her established home church (McCoy Chapel Church) as often as her health allowed. Even at an advanced age, she maintained a fighting spirit with razor sharp memory and wit. She was quick to share a Bible verse, joke or honest life lesson.

On November 14, 2022, the Lord called her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlos and Hattie Braddy, her sisters, Stella Bethea, and Daisy Braddy, her brothers Carlos and CJ Braddy, her son Wayne Stewart and grandson, Baron Alston. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Carolyn Owens, and sons Desi “Ricky” Owens, Vandaran, Darryl and Lindsey Stewart. She also leaves 25 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church family and adopted family members.

Although she will be missed, let us remember the joy and love she brought to our lives and those around her. Let’s honor her final wish to rest amongst family in Sellers and celebrate a long life well lived!
