Shelly James McGill, age 69, was the son of the late Deacon Henry Ellis and Deaconess Callie Mae Brayboy McGill. He was born on September 9, 1950 in Lake City, SC.
Shelly departed this life the day after Christmas, December 26, 2019 following an extended illness.
He was educated in the public schools of Lake City, SC and graduated from J. Paul Truluck High School.
Shelly was gifted with lots of skills and spent many years working with his parents, and siblings as self-employed farmers raising cattle, growing tobacco, soybeans, and many other cash crops. His passion was planting his crops and taking them to market.
Shelly was famously known for his infectious laugh, his love for his family and his Kango hats. He loved to travel to the beach, and to visit his sisters and brothers for special occasions and family gatherings.
He leaves to cherish his fond and loving memories: his children: Sharder Denise Brockington of Lake City, SC ( James Lee Williams of Shelby, NC) and Dennis Gaskins of Jacksonville, FL, a step-daughter, Eva Ryant (Chuck) Smith of Florence, SC; eight grandchildren: Calvin Brockington of Myrtle Beach, SC, Jamron Williams of Columbia, SC, Kendra Williams of Albany, NY, Terrance Williams of Atlanta, GA, Nyberia and Nigel Gaskins of Lake City, SC, Eliycia and Aniyiah Gaskins of Jacksonville, FL; two step-grands: Aleah and Aaron Ryant of Florence, SC, two sisters: Geneva Williams of New York, NY and Mary Alice Vaughan of Washington, DC, Sisters-in-law: Jacqueline Jackson McGill of Marion, SC and Patricia McGill of Columbia, SC, two nieces with whom he shared a special bond: Antionette Cooper Henneghan and Poiette McGill Bromell, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whom he loved dearly.
Public viewing will be held at Graham & Godwin Funeral Home at 384 South Church Street, Lake City, SC 29560 on Thursday, January 2 from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled to be held at St. James Baptist Church at 2008 Vox Highway, Johnsonville, SC 29555 on Friday, January 3 at 1:00 p.m. with burial at White Oak Cemetery , 3133 White Oak Road in Cades, SC 29518.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Shelly McGill and the McGill Family Homestead located at 2770 Solomon Road, Lake City, SC 29560 each day from 4-7pm.
Friends are also welcome to visit the home of his daughter, Sharder Brockington, located at 311-A Fairview Street, Lake City, SC 29560 each day from 7:30pm.
