~The Obituary~

“Death is an ending to the daughter of the earth, but to the soul, it is the start, the triumph of life.”

Mrs. Reba Ann General Guess entered into eternal rest on September 11, 2019, at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Reba was the daughter of the late Norman and Gertrude McCrae General. She was born in Marion County on October 14, 1927.

Reba’s spiritual foundation began with her parents as a member of St, Phillips United Methodist Church until her untimely death. She was a visible and viable member of St, Phillips as the church organist, member of the United Methodist Women, and an admirable fundraiser. She loved working with others and served faithfully until her health declined.

Reba’s educational experience began as being a graduate of the Marion County Training School in 1945 and then receiving a teaching degree at South Carolina State College (University) in 1949. She lived briefly in Chicago, Illinois and returned to the south to begin her teaching career. She dedicated forty years to teaching which started in the Columbus Georgia School System, Dillon County School District 1 in Lake View, South Carolina, and ended at Johnakin Middle School, Marion, South Carolina. She impacted so many lives as an English teacher and will forever be remembered as one who cared about the needs and learning of her students. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Reba was preceded in death by her husband, Ret. LTC Albert B. Guess, son, Ronald J. Richardson, and sisters, Edith G. Ford, Geneva G. Phillips, Cynthia G, Pruitt, and brothers, Howard General, and William General.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: a loving daughter, Rita G. James (Laval) of Charlotte, North Carolina, four grandchildren: Tia R. Richardson of Marion, South Carolina, Jamir W. James, Jordyn V. James, and Jarron L. James of Charlotte, North Carolina, three great- grandchildren: Taylor, Kayden, and Kaleb Richardson of Marion, South Carolina, one brother, James W. General (Gladys) of Marion, South Carolina, one sister-in-law, Minister Eartha Lee Guess, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, one brother-in-law, Thomas Guess, of Vance, South Carolina, special cousins: Mary A. Belton, of Latta, South Carolina, Christine B. Washington, of Marion, South Carolina, Lottie General, and Annie Mae G. Scott of St, Albans, Queens, New York, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends. A special thanks and appreciation goes to her caregivers, Tiney Bowman of Wingate, North Carolina and Beverly Wyn of Monroe, North Carolina and Novant Hospice Care.
