Mary Nell Hughes

Sis. Mary Nell Hughes,65, departed this life on Tuesday March 20, 2018 in Florence, SC. She was the sister of Cora Nicholson. You may visit the family at 217 Amber St. Marion.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at Friendship AME Church Saturday March 24, 2018 at 10:00am. She will be laid to rest in the Old Ford Cemetery.

Mary Nell Hughes transitioned into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.  She was born in Marion, SC on May 11, 1952 to the late Esau and Leila Hughes.  Mary graduated from Terrell’s Bay High School in 1970.  She obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Morris College and a Masters of Arts Degree from Francis Marion University.  She taught in the Marlboro and Marion county school systems for over 30 years.

Mary loved the lord and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior.  Mary was a faithful member of Friendship AME church.  She served as secretary and member of the financial committee. 

Mary had a positive impact on many.  She was a very thoughtful and generous person.  She was always willing to help in any way she could.  She enjoyed shopping, baking, talking on the phone, journaling, reading and watching her favorite shows on TV.  Mary had a witty personality and a bright smile.  She was also a very punctual and particular person.

            Mary leaves to cherish the precious memories of her life: one sister: Cora (Jesse) Nicholson of Columbia, SC;  a brother-in-law:  John Arthur Rogers of Philadelphia, PA; one sister-in-law: Jessie Mae Abraham of Newark, NJ; three nephews: Terry (Teresa) Rogers of Bennetsville, SC, Brian (Kimberly) Phillips of Marion, SC and Otis Tyrone (Shanise) Abraham of Phillipsburg, NJ; four nieces: Adrienne Phillips of Florence, SC, Diane Moore, Michelle Bennett, and Sandra King all of Marion, SC; two god-daughters: Kellie Marion and Shanita Timmons.  She also had a loving host of great nephew, great nieces, other relatives, former students and friends.
