~ LIFE REFLECTIONS~

LEROY “ROY” ELLEBY, SR.  was born on October, 4, 1933 to the union of Johnson and Vermell (Abraham) Elleby. He was the first born of 7 children.

Roy accepted Christ at an early age.  He worshiped at Saint Mary AME Church with his parents and siblings.  He was a faithful member, taking on leadership responsibilities for several years as a Steward Pro-Tem, Treasurer and Trustee in his adult years.

He received his education in Marion County.  He discontinued his education while in high school, because he realized the necessity of going to work to help support the family.   Roy later received his High School Diploma from Terrell’s Bay High School, Centenary, South Carolina in May, 1967.

Roy married the love of his life, Sallie Jane Fogan of Marion, SC, in December, 1953.  She preceded him in death, September, 1969.  To that union, 5 children were born; Leroy Jr., Theresa, Venessa, Angela and Pamela.

Always the businessman, Roy was never afraid of hard work.   He was employed at Marion Wholesale, a food distribution center, where he worked in the warehouse and as a delivery driver for 20 years.  He served as a manager for Russell Stover Factory for over 30 years.   In addition, Roy recognized the importance of having his own business.  He farmed, buying and selling livestock, growing prize winning watermelons, beans, peas and cucumbers.  He cut hair on the back porch of his home before he purchased Elleby’s Barber Shop in downtown Marion. He served the community for over 50 years.

Roy enjoyed relaxing by playing checkers with his friends, traveling, fishing, hunting and going to the beach with his family.  He loved watching baseball, basketball and football on TV.

Roy received many awards and recognition for service to the community.  Some of the ones he was most proud of were: St Mary AME Church - Father of the Year/ Man of the Year 1990-1991 The Dr. ML King, Jr. - Pee Dee Area Memorial Celebration 2009 - Marshal of the Year.  Masonic Brotherhood’s Longstanding Services Member Award in 2015.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents Johnson and Vermell, sister Mary, brothers Major and Sylvester Elleby.

He leaves to cherish his memory 5 loving children, Leroy (LuJuane) Elleby Jr.,  Theresa (Mark) Holmes,  Venessa (Selwyn) Stephen, Angela Elleby and Pamela Elleby, nine grandchildren, Erynn Elleby,  Ashley Elleby, Erica Elleby, Auhston Elleby, Jasmine Elleby, Mark Holmes Jr, Cameron Holmes, Shadeed Stephen, Shamar Stephen,  three siblings, Lester (Ricky) Elleby,  Jesse L. (Burnetta) Elleby and  Janette (Joel) Daniels, and a host of  nieces, nephews,  cousins, loved ones and friends.
