Ethel Barton-Carrigan Obituary

Mother Ethel Jean Barton-Carrigan was 80 and departed this life Thursday December 5, 2019 at her home in Marion, SC. She was the mother of Dertria Carrigan. You may visit the family at 1102 Lewis St. Marion.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel Friday December 13, 2019 at 1:00 pm.

Obituary

Ethel Jean Barton Carrigan was born in Camden Alabama on August 19, 1939 to the late Sam Barton Sr. and Eddie Mae Barton Lawson. She departed this life December 5, 2019 at 5:40 pm. 

She was married to the late David “Sonny” Carrigan for fifty one years. The Lord blessed them with one child Deartria Carrigan.

After 1956 she moved to New York where she worked various jobs as a Mother’s Helper, factories and some domestic work until she retired in 1993. Bur it was a job as a waitress where she met the love of her life David. They were married in April 1963.

She was a faithful and active member of Southern Baptist Church of New York, New York. Ms. Ethel enjoyed her family, going to church, singing, cooking and a little gossip.

In 1994 when she and Mr. Sonny moved to Marion South Carolina, around 1997 she joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. She worked with the late Theresa Stoudamire for a few years in Child Development.

She never forgot about Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, she left and joined her husband at his home church Hills Chapel Baptist Church in Duford, South Carolina very early in the 2000’s.

Over the last few years her health started declining but with the help of the good Lord and her daughter Deartria she was able to keep going.

She had two siblings that preceded her in death she loved very much, her older brother Albert “Sonny” Barton and younger sister Eddie Mae “Pie” Pettway.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters Deartria “DeeDee” Carrigan, Marion, SC and Gwen Barton, New York City, one sister Claudetta Barton, Marion, SC, one brother Sam D. (Arlene) Barton, VA, two stepdaughters, Rita (Lonnie) Brunson, Rose Leggett both of South Carolina, one stepson; Kemper Worley, Washington, DC, four grandchildren; Tamara Frazier, GA, Derrick Barton, AL, Pete Brunson, CA, Tamika Brunson, NC, four great grands; Tajah Frazier, Tyler Frazier, Tre’vaughn Morris and Tai’Heir Morris, all of GA. nieces and nephews; Pam Burton, VA, Keith Burton, VA, Sajada Wilson, AL, Kisha Foster, Fl, Tanya Barton, NYC, Darryl Barton, NYC, Richard Smith, VA, Lenora, Rayshell, Raymond Jr. Hickson, all of Marion, SC. Special niece and adopted daughter Ila (Raymond) Hickson of Marion, SC. Best friends and sisters and brothers in Christ; Charles and Castella Childs, NYC, Willie Mae Williams, NYC, Robert and Alma Outlaw, NYC and Eula Morrison, Marion, SC.
