Mother Thelma Hughes Dunlap,97, departed this life on Saturday March 17, 2018 in the Providence Northeast Hospital, Columbia, SC. She was the aunt of Gloria Armour.

Wake services are scheduled to be held at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel, Marion, Friday March 23, 2018, 6pm-8pm. Lily of the Valley Chapter #264 OES will be in charge of the rites.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the St. John AME Church, Marion Saturday March 24, 2018 at 2:00pm. She will be laid to rest in the Devotion Gardens Cemetery, Mullins.

~Obituary~

Ninety-seven years, spent and gone. A life that touched many. A smile on her Savior's face. A soul that is finally home.

Thelma H. Dunlap peacefully departed this life on Saturday March 17, 2018 with her family by her side in Columbia, SC. Thelma was born on April 9, 1920 in Marion, SC. She was one of two children to the late Isaiah and Beatrice Hughes.

Thelma received her formal education through the Marion County School System. She earned a BA degree in education from Kittrell College in Kittrell, NC. She taught in the South Carolina school district for several years. Upon changing her career, Thelma became a certified nursing assistant and was employed with Jenkins Nursing Home until she retired. Sitting idly was a past time of hers. After her retirement, Thelma served others as a private duty nurse.

Sister Thelma accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She was a lifelong ,member of St. John AME Church, where she was fondly referenced as the mother of the church. She served as a faithful member who truly loved the Lord. She was a St. John Senior Citizen. she dutifully served on the Stewardess Board #2, Pastor's Aide, a member of the Senior Choir and Senior Missionary. Thelma was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lily of the Valley Chapter #264.

Thelma was preceded in death by her loving father; Isaiah Hughes; loving mother: Beatrice Hughes; brother; Herbert B. Hughes and husband; Carson Dunlap.

She leaves to cherish her memory~ her devoted niece; Gloria H. (Robert) Armour; great-nieces; Robbin Armour (Charlie) Richardson and Rashana L. Armour; great-nephew; David P. Swinton; great-great niece; Lauren B. Richardson; great-great nephew; Brice J. Richardson; a number of treasured friends and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends. Thelma also had an opportunity to befriend two little girls who became her "little buddies"; Little Maddysin Bellamy (age 2) and Little Kai'Lyse Smith (age 1) will miss her dearly.
